Dense
pine woods, grand lanes with palms
- today the terrain on the north-west of Barcelona
is as it is called: a park. On the big square, surrounded by
trees, pensioners meat each other for a chat and young couples
have a rendezvous.
The large multi coloured bench that winds through the park as a giant snake, gives every opportunity to do so. When Gaudí started with the construction, there was no question of a park. There was no water, the terrain was bare, the slopes without vegetation. Thanks to Gaudí, it's now possible for trees and bushes to grow. But originally there did not only had to come a recreation park for the population. Eusebi Güell, a great admirer and a patron of Gaudí, wanted to do more: he thought of a neighbourhood that in all respects had to be exemplary, a private paradise, en garden city. It only stayed a park - a park for entire Barcelona. |
